How it started
Family is the Key to our vineyard and winery. In 2011 we began with just 400 vines, and with the help from our family and friends planting, trimming, and harvesting, we have continued to expand each year. The Spare Key Winery is one of the few estate grown and bottled wineries in Northern Michigan, meaning our wines are made from grapes grown in our vineyard and processed on-site by our team. We offer a Spare Key to all visitors passing through, to unlock experiences and good times shared with each other. We hope Spare Key will become a Key in your life and encourage you to return to experience our Spare Key family again.
How it’s going
What started as a dream and a hobby grew into much more. Starting from the ground up, when planting the first 400 vines in 2011 grew into 3,800 vines and counting.
A small addition was added to the garage, and a tent was put up to allow guests a place to relax and enjoy their wine became a new building not only with a tasting room that included a porch, but also has a storage space, office, and production area.

We celebrated 5 years of learning, growth, achievements, and lots of customers. We can’t wait to celebrate and expand for years to come!
